Lowton's player lowdown: Matthew's verdict on Karim, Ron and others

Matthew Lowton has only been at Villa for a few short weeks but he's already well acquainted with everyone in the dressing room.

Here Matthew gives his verdict on his fellow new recruits and how they've settled in, as well as running the rule over the very best players in various categories.

New Signings

Karim El Ahmadi

Karim is a fantastic player. He's very technical. You can give him the ball anywhere, in any situation and you know for a fact he will deal with it.

He's fitted straight in and he plays the gaffer's way. He's always available to take the ball off the defenders. He's always an option.

He's looked good. He's silky smooth and glides across the pitch with the ball. But don't be fooled by that, he can defend and get his tackles in too. His work-rate is superb!

I've only just heard about his reputation as a style icon back in Holland - I believe he's in the top few well-dressed footballers as voted for by Esquire Magazine. That was news to me when I heard it.

I've not noticed any untoward or fantastic items in his locker. I'll keep my eyes peeled every morning now though!

Brett Holman

Brett is a quiet lad. But he's similar to Karim. He's fitted in great with the rest of the squad and he's well respected as a good footballer too.

He's superb on the ball, his touch is fantastic and the positions he takes up on the pitch, in between the opposition midfield and defence is tremendous.

He scored at Burton and I'm sure there's more to come.

He gets on really well with Karim, having both come around the same time from Holland.

I stopped the pair of them at Bodymoor the other day and asked them what language they were speaking and it was Dutch. Brett is fluent! He is a well-versed man!

Ron Vlaar

Ron looks the kind of guy you wouldn't want to upset! But he's a great lad to have in your team!

He's huge. He's a presence at the back. He's very solid defensively.

He's a very good player on the ball. Technically he can handle having the ball all day. His passing is excellent.

Some fans would take a first look at him and think he's just a defender who defends but he's a typical Dutch player. He's fantastic on the ball, starts moves off and picks passes out all the time.

Best Of The Rest

Best Trainer

I'd say Stevie Ireland. Some of his touches are superb and the passes he picks out are sublime! I don't know how he sees them, to be honest.

He's so technically gifted. His first touch is just immaculate. He works his socks off too so he's got everything you need really.

Most Skilful

Stevie would be up there but I'd go for Karim El Ahmadi. He's got everything you need on the ball in tight situations.

He has these little turns and spins. It's hard to take the ball off Karim in training I can tell you!

Biggest Joker

Charles N'Zogbia! People have told me that he comes across as quite a shy lad but he's nothing like that in the dressing room.

He's a good laugh and very funny. He keeps me laughing whenever I'm with him. He's always telling jokes and winding the lads up. He likes to get a few digs in!

Gabby Agbonlahor, without a shadow of a doubt!

In one game in USA, I think it was Chicago, he hit the ball past a defender and chased it down. The defender looked like he was in reverse. It was astonishing! He's unbelievably quick!

Most Intelligent

Ciaran Clark looks intelligent! And to be fair he comes across very well as a person too so I'll go with him.

Best Dressed

I'm going to go with Stevie Ireland again. He must have about 600 pairs of trainers!

I've seen him at the training ground most days for the first five weeks of pre-season and he hasn't worn the same pair twice yet!

Best Taste in Music

Eric Lichaj is the dressing room DJ. He's had his playlist on for every game so far.

He's had a few mixes - dance, R&B, that kind of thing. He's been doing it pre-season and he's been good!
