Given: I want to give my "heart and soul" to Villa

By Paul Brown

Shay Given admits one of the major reasons he quit Ireland was to put his "heart and soul" into life at Villa.

Given revealed his decision to stand down as No.1 with the Republic last night on his personal Twitter account.

And, speaking exclusively to AVTV this afternoon, the ace shot-stopper spoke of his eagerness to continue impressing on the domestic stage in claret and blue for many more years to come.

He told AVTV: "One of the main reasons for my decision was because I wanted to put my full heart and soul into Aston Villa. I want to give Villa everything I have.

"Obviously I'm not getting younger but I felt it was time to concentrate on Aston Villa - to the football club, the supporters - and give my all.

"I felt I could do that better if I retired from Ireland.

"I've done a bit of research and noticed that Brad Friedel retired from internationals when he was 35 and Edwin Van Der was 36. Brad is still playing!

"There was a lot of thought and consideration going into it. It wasn't something that flew off the top of my head last night. There was months of thinking about it. What should I do and stuff?

"I just felt now was the right time for someone else to take over at the start of a new campaign and for me to get my head down with Aston Villa.

"It was a tough decision because I loved playing for my country. I will miss it, there's no getting away from that. It was a huge honour.

"I was lucky to get one cap so to get 125 was surpassing my wildest dreams!

"But you have to make the decision at some point. There's never a good time to make it. I felt now was the right time and, as I said, a lot of it was to do with Aston Villa."

Given was speaking exclusively to AVTV on a wide array of subjects and you can watch the full interview now on the club's in-house television channel.
