Dunne: Ireland not at Euro 2012 to make up the numbers

By Dan Harrison

Richard Dunne insists there is a strong belief in the Republic of Ireland camp that the boys in green can make a big impact on Euro 2012.

Dunne is upbeat about Ireland's chances at the tournament finals despite facing a difficult task to qualify from Group C.

The Republic have been drawn in a tough group against Croatia, Italy and reigning world and European champions Spain.

But Villa defender Dunne believes Giovanni Trapattoni's side have a good chance of progressing because of their mental toughness coupled with strong organisation.

"There is no point in us being here otherwise," said Dunne.

"We have to believe we can go all the way and every team that is here will believe the same thing.

"We know we are as organised as anyone and will be as strong as anyone so it is all about hopefully having that bit of luck that can help us progress."

Dunne points to the strong spirit in the Ireland camp as a huge plus going into the tournament in Ukraine and Poland.

"It is really good. It is really positive," he added.

"We are a really close bunch of friends anyway and the longer we spend together the better the atmosphere is.

"We know that when we go into the games we are going to fight for each other."
