Delfouneso recalls Villa debut on return to Iceland with England

By Paul Brown

Nathan Delfouneso takes a trip down memory lane this evening as he gets set to play Iceland at the site of his competitive Villa debut.

The Fonz came on as a substitute in the away tie of the UEFA Cup second round match against Icelandic opponents FH Hafnarfjordor in 2008, Villa winning 4-1.

This, in turn, made Delfouneso the youngest player to represent Villa in European competition, at the age of 17 years and 195 days.

Now he's back at national stadium 'Laugardalsvöllur' with England U21s as they face Iceland in a crucial Euro 2013 qualifying clash.

The Three Lions take on their Group 8 opponents in the capital Reykjavik tonight with three important points up for grabs.

Both sides will be looking for a return to the Championship Finals in two years after getting knocked out at the group stage in Denmark this summer.

Delfouneso is relishing the encounter.

He said: "As soon as we arrived here on Tuesday I recognised the area.

"I made my first competitive appearance for the club here, so I have nice memories and it's nice to be back.

"Training on the pitch was good, it's a nice pitch, very wet but decent to pass on so should suit us.

"This will be a very tough game, especially having played against them in Preston in a friendly a few months ago.

"They are a decent side and beat us 2-1 then, so we have to be at our best.

"We are looking forward to it, though, and we'll try to put it right this time.

"They came at us and played well. They are very good on the ball, very good technically, they are physically strong and a confident side too.

"We will have to stick to our plan, make sure we play to our best because if we don't we'll find it very difficult."

Villa also have Craig Gardner and Nathan Baker in the England U21 squad as they face Iceland tonight and Norway in Drammen on Monday.

Andreas Weimann, meanwhile, is with Austria U21s as they get set for the qualifying matches tonight against Netherlands in Innsbruck and against Scotland in Glasgow on Monday.
