Bannan greets budding stars at Villa summer soccer school

Budding footballers at one of Villa's terrific summer soccer schools received a surprise visit from Scotland international Barry Bannan.

The midfielder stopped by at Villa Park's Indoor Academy to greet the youngsters who were taking part in the football development week.

The group of seven to 14-year-olds were put through their paces by Villa community coaches before getting the opportunity to quiz Bannan about his experiences as a professional footballer.

Bannan was a product of Villa's highly-respected academy, making him the ideal player to offer advice to the youngsters.

"It is great to come and see these boys who support the club and to put a smile on their faces is brilliant," he said.

"I had only been there about 20 or 25 minutes and saw some cracking goals from some of the boys so it is encouraging that there are good players coming here.

"Some of these boys could run all day so it is brilliant to watch them.

"I was speaking to the community coaches and there have been about 15 players that have got into the academy through things like this.

"So if you can keep it going and you can see the youth that is coming through in the big team now at Villa it is brilliant."

There is plenty more football fun in store over the summer holidays with further football development weeks taking place at venues across the West Midlands.

The soccer schools run between 10am and 3pm for the seven to 14 years age group and 10am to 12noon for the four to six years 'mini kickers' age group.

Not only do you have the chance to learn more about the game and develop your skills, the sessions provide a chance for you to make friends with kids your own age.

Courses are taught by our FA qualified CRB checked coaches, who have Emergency Aid and Safeguarding Children certificates.

Players will require football kit, football boots and trainers, warm, waterproof clothing/jacket, change of clothes, towel, goalkeeper gloves (if applicable), shin pads, sun hat/sun block and any relevant medication.

On the GRASS surfaces, you should bring football boots and trainers, while if the course is on ASTRO TURF only trainers are required.
