Friedel agrees to join Tottenham

The Club can confirm that Brad Friedel has agreed to join Tottenham Hotspur.

Friedel moves to White Hart Lane after three seasons in claret and blue.

Chief Executive Paul Faulkner said: "I would like to thank Brad for the terrific contribution he has made at Aston Villa in his three seasons here and our supporters will no doubt echo these sentiments.

"We wish him well in the future and look forward to seeing him again at Villa Park."

The shot-stopper made 114 straight top-flight appearances for Villa and 131 in all competitions.

He holds the record for the most consecutive top-flight matches with 266. When he last missed a top-flight game in May 2004 Jose Mourinho was still Porto coach and the Football League had yet to break up into the Championship, League One and League Two.

He is also officially Villa's oldest ever player, a record he achieved on February 1 of this year by playing in the club's away match at Manchester United.

Friedel's age of 39 years and 259 days surpassed the previous record held by Ernie "Mush" Callaghan, who last played for Villa against Grimsby Town in April 1947, aged 39 years and 257 days.

Friedel, who played for USA in the 1994 World Cup, had his first taste of English football when he was taken to Newcastle United by Kevin Keegan, although he never played for the Magpies because of work permit problems.

He subsequently had a spell on loan to Danish club Brondby and then had a spell with Turkish giants Galatasaray before returning to America to join Columbus Crew.

He was finally granted a work permit in late 1997 after joining Liverpool, and made his Premier League debut for the Reds at Villa Park on February 28 1998 - the day Stan Collymore scored twice in a 2-1 home win in John Gregory's first match at Villa manager.

In November 2000 he joined Blackburn on a free transfer, helping the Ewood Park club to promotion that season and eventually making over 300 appearances.
