Bent and Young dazzle for England in friendly win

Darren Bent and Ashley Young bagged a goal apiece in a 2-1 win for England over Denmark - highlighting claret and blue class in the process.

It certainly didn't take record-signing Bent long to show off his predatory instincts during this friendly Copenhagen encounter.

Daniel Agger headed Denmark in front after seven minutes but fab forward Bent equalised almost immediately, slotting the ball into an empty net from three yards.

Christian Eriksen hit a post with a 20-yard strike, while goalkeeper Joe Hart denied Dennis Rommedahl.

But half-time substitute Young struck the winner for England with a precise and low, right-footed effort, after good harrying work in the build-up by fellow second half star Stewart Downing.

There's no question Young was the best player after the break, with a performance laced with pace and grace.

The winger-cum-forward made an immediate impact, first with a teasing cross that Bent headed and former Villa man Thomas Sorensen saved and then with a header of his own that drew another stop from the Danish keeper.

It was all part of an excellent start to the second half by England as they carved out chance after chance, with yet another former Villa man Milner playing in Bent once again with an excellent reverse pass but the striker shot wide.

England looked comfortable in possession after taking the lead through Young and he almost scored again but his strike was blocked at the vital moment.

With Kyle Walker an unused substitute, Gareth Southgate in the ITV studio and Andy Townsend doing the commentary, you could say it was a real claret and blue night on the international stage.

Meanwhile Barry Bannan played just over half an hour as Scotland beat Northern Ireland 3-0 at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in the second game of the Nations Cup.

The midfield maestro almost almost made it four when his rasping free-kick was pushed over in the closing stages.
