Johnson praises team-mates for digging deep in Posh win

Daniel Johnson praised his Villa team-mates for digging deep to see off Peterborough in a pulsating FA Youth Cup fourth round tie.

The skipper sparked a revival by cancelling out the home side's opener with his 44th minute equaliser.

He admitted there was a feeling of relief when Villa drew level, with the home side making it extremely difficult for Tony McAndrew's team in the first period.

But the Jamaican-born midfielder felt the leveller gave them belief that they could go on and win the tie.

"We did very well," he told AVTV. "We scored a goal and then managed to get the two goals in extra-time. We dug deep.

"There was a little bit of play between me, Samir [Carruthers] and Mikey [Drennan].

"Samir managed to lay it off and I managed to keep my shot low and managed to get it in the bottom corner.

"I was really relieved, thinking at least we have got a goal back going in to half-time and we can go on and win this.

"When we went in we said we wanted to stay on top. We just wanted to get back out there, get it down and play and get another goal."

Johnson was quick to pay tribute to the man who provided the assist for his goal - inspirational midfielder Samir Carruthers.

"He is a terrific player," said the skipper. "He did very well and hopefully he can keep on doing what he has been doing."

Although Johnson was on the periphery for last year's run to the final, he still gained valuable experience from being part of that successful squad.

The captain admits he and other second year players such as Daniel Devine and Derrick Williams have an important role in helping along the new faces throughout this cup campaign.

"Last year was good experience for some of us," he added. "Now we are second years so we know what it is all about.

"For the new boys that have come up, we have just got to talk to them and tell them what it is about."
