Houllier festive boost as Petrov and Delph return to full training

Gerard Houllier has been handed some fab festive news with Fabian Delph and Stiliyan Petrov now back in full training.

Houllier is thrilled to see the pair return to the fold at Bodymoor Heath after spells on the sidelines.

Delph and Petrov were out for seven and two months respectively, both with knee injuries.

Now the talented duo will be looking to build up their fitness levels and make it into Gerard Houllier's team as Villa look to charge up the Barclays Premier League table.

He said: "The good news is that Fabian seems to be taking part in practically all our sessions, which is a good sign and a good omen.

"I say practically because sometimes we rest him in between.

"Stiliyan is back and has been full training last week and this week.

"I'm pleased the likes of Stiliyan, Fabian and Nigel will be back so we could have more competition."

Despite the boost, Houllier believes the Tottenham game will come too soon for the Villa pair.

He continued: "I think it's a bit too early. I'll see. I can't say yes or no yet."

Houllier is relishing the match against Tottenham, insisting it will be a tough game for his upwardly-mobile side.

But he's adamant Harry Redknapp will see Villa as equally difficult opposition.

He added: "They are going to be difficult opposition, but it will be difficult for them too. We'll be all right.

"It's a shame because we had three steps I would say with West Brom, Wigan and Tottenham. So obviously we've missed a step, not because of us but because of the weather, so we've got the next step straight away.

"After that we've got Manchester City and then Chelsea and we've got to reschedule the Wigan match."
