Vassilev: Committing to Villa was a no-brainer

Indiana Vassilev says he had no hesitation in committing his future to Aston Villa.

Vassilev has broken into the first team this season, making four appearances across three competitions.

And after putting pen-to-paper on a new two-year deal, the 19-year-old cited the positive influence of Dean Smith and the environment around the club as the main factors in his decision.

He said: “It was a no-brainer for me. This past year the club have supported me a lot and I’ve been able to break into the first team.

“Since I’ve done that, I’ve received a lot of support from staff and players. I’m really, really happy to have signed for another two years.

“I’ve got to keep working hard and hopefully the future will hold a lot of great things.”

The American joined Villa in 2018 and has since impressed on his journey through the youth ranks, becoming a key member of the club’s Under-23s.

Having scored regularly for the Young Lions, Smith handed Vassilev his senior debut in an FA Cup tie against Fulham in January.

The striker went onto feature against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup Semi-Final First Leg before appearing in Premier League games against Brighton and Watford, and he hopes more first team action will follow when football resumes.

Vassilev said: “It was almost a blur because the games came within a three-week span, so I didn’t have time to process it.

“Towards mid-February it began to sink in, and it was obviously a great moment in my career so far.

“There’s a lot of hard work to come and I want to continue to get better and better and better.”
