Dean Smith believes that results at home will define Aston Villa’s season, as his side prepare to return to action against Tottenham Hotspur at Villa Park on Sunday.
His team go into the clash having won each of their last two games in B6 with stoppage time winners, against Watford and Leicester City in the Premier League and Carabao Cup respectively.
Ahead of taking on José Mourinho’s side, Smith outlined the importance of Villa’s form at home so far this season.
“Our season will be defined at Villa Park,” he said.
“We have been fairly strong there all season, we have to make sure that we give [the fans] something to back us with.”
Smith has come up against Mourinho once before, when his Walsall side faced Chelsea in the League Cup back in 2015.
John Terry played the full 90 minutes on that night, and Smith has been tapping into the knowledge of his Assistant Head Coach ahead of the game.
“I’ve been picking his brain for the past 18 months, in terms of how the top managers worked with him,” Smith explained.
“There is a lot of mutual respect between José and John.
“He’s played under José twice and they celebrated a lot of success, so that respect is natural.”
The boss also gave an update on how Villa’s January arrivals have settled in at Bodymoor Heath.
