In an in-depth interview with VillaTV, Neil Cutler revealed his delight at working with such a strong collection of goalkeepers at Aston Villa, while he also provided recovery updates on Tom Heaton and Jed Steer.
The quality of goalkeeping at Villa Park so far this season has received plenty of plaudits, with Heaton, Steer and Ørjan Nyland all performing well when selected, while Pepe Reina has also impressed since his January arrival.
Cutler gave a fascinating insight into the work at Bodymoor Heath that enables the stoppers to produce such accomplished performances on matchday.
He said: “We have a really strong bunch and they are a pleasure to work with.
“The work that you do with them becomes conscious [to begin with], but when you work on the details for long enough then it becomes sub-conscious, where they don’t have to think about it.
“Then they can go onto the pitch and they don’t have to think about what they’re doing; they just do it.”
Reina and Nyland have caught the eye since the turn of the year, with both producing the good at big moments in both the Premier League and Carabao Cup.
On the Spanish World Cup-winner, Cutler explained: “When he walks in the door, you see that he has that personality and character, he’s a leader and a winner and he’s someone that we can all learn from.
Discussing Nyland’s improvement, he added: “He’s paid so much attention to the details so now, it becomes a neurological pattern.
“That’s the work that we have done over the past year and it makes me proud to see his transformation and how far he has come.”
