Story in brief

Aston Villa Women picked up their seventh straight win in the FA Women’s Championship as they stretched their unbeaten league run to 13 games.

Shania Hayles got the hosts off to the perfect start, racing away from the Charlton backline before sliding the ball into the far corner after just 23 seconds.

In a hard fought first half, Nadine Hanssen struck the post with a header as Villa tried unsuccessfully to extend their lead.

Things got nervy as the second half unfolded with Villa toiling against an opponent that was happy to break up the game and sit back.

But Emma Follis and Mel Johnson emerged from the bench to score in the final three minutes and seal an important win.

Fast starters

Fans had barely had a chance to take their seats before Villa were celebrating the opener.

The home side carved through Charlton straight away, releasing the speedy Hayles in on goal.

She made no mistake, scoring her ninth goal of the season by sending the ball past the ‘keeper and into the far corner.

The streak continues

Villa are now unbeaten in all 13 league matches as they top the table.

Gemma Davies’ team have won 12 of those matches, drawing only once against Durham.

The latest win takes them six points clear at the summit.

The finishers

Just when things were getting tight and nervy at the end, Villa’s substitutes ensured the match would finish on a high.

Follis injected life into her team as soon as she came on and she duly sealed the win with a thumping finish.

Johnson’s injury time strike will give Villa’s top scorer a timely boost after a run of games without a goal.

What’s next?

A trip to Durham beckons next Sunday before the Women return home to take on Coventry United.

Tickets for their remaining home games are on sale here.
