Dean's debrief: Last gasp winner, fighting back and faithful fans

A jubilant Dean Smith spoke to the media after seeing his side score an injury time winner to beat Watford at Villa Park.

The Aston Villa boss discussed the match winning moment, his team's fighting spirit and the influence of the home faithful.

Here’s what he had to say…

On winning goal…

I’m not sure what part of his [Tyrone Mings] anatomy it came off, but he’s certainly claiming it. As an ex-centre-half I’d have claimed it as well, so unlucky Ezri.

It was great that the three centre halves have all contributed. Kortney’s won the first header from the free-kick, Tyrone’s picked it up – probably should have got a penalty – and Ezri has hit a great effort.

It’s just deflected ever so slightly off Tyrone, and he’s certainly laid claim to it.

On coming back to win…

I thought we dominated up until the moment they scored. I thought it was a good performance that was probably lacking a bit of ambition in the final third.

We’re still working on a system that we’re getting used to and tactically the players are getting better. We just need a bit more ambition in the final third and what I mean by that is if Matt Targett’s crossing, I want Freddy Guilbert arriving at the far post.

At half-time we showed them clips of what they’d done well and things we needed to do better. We went out and showed a lot of belief in the second half.

On home crowd…

Villa Park’s an important place for us in this league. We’ve got to put in performances and get results. I thought we deserved that today.

I think it was quite apt. We scored in the 95th minute and there probably could have been ten minutes added on at the end.

Watford came here to slow the game down and kill the game and get our supporters against us. I think it worked the other way and our supporters got behind us even more.
