Aston Villa pushed Manchester City all the way but exited the FA Youth Cup courtesy of a narrow 2-1 defeat in their fourth-round tie.
The battling Young Lions were undone by two early goals as City, who have reached four of the previous five finals, progressed at their Academy Stadium to set up a fifth-round meeting with Fulham.
Lewis Fiorini fired the home side into an eighth-minute lead, which was doubled by Morgan Rogers shortly afterwards as City led 2-0 at the interval.
Yet Villa came into the tie after the restart and went close when substitute Bradley Young headed against a post midway through the second half.
The inspired visitors then reduced the arrears when Tyreik Wright netted a fine solo goal in the 86th minute to set up a tense finale.
But, despite their efforts, Villa could not find a late leveller and it was City who moved into the last 16 of the competition.
