At a Glance
Aston Villa kick-off 2020 with a trip to Turf Moor to take on Burnley on New Year’s Day.
The Villans are looking to bounce back after a disappointing 3-0 defeat against Watford at Vicarage Road last time out.
That result left the team 18th in the Premier League, one point adrift of safety.
Opponents Burnley come into the game on the back of defeats against Everton (1-0) and Manchester United (2-0).
The Clarets have won five and lost five of their ten Premier League home games at Turf Moor this season.
Villa will need to watch out for Burnley’s top marksman, Chris Wood, who has seven goals this term, including one in the 2-2 draw at Villa Park earlier this season.
Dean Smith confirmed after Saturday’s game against Watford that Matt Targett picked up a hamstring injury.
The extent of the full-back’s injury hasn’t been confirmed as yet.
John McGinn and Jed Steer remain long-term absentees for Villa.
Burnley came through their last match against Manchester United unscathed, and they could have Aaron Lennon back for the New Year’s Day clash.
"Sean Dyche knows how to do well in this league.
“They’ve been in the Premier League for a few years now and they’ve become an established team.
“They’ll be hard to beat, and Turf Moor is a place that we’re going to have to roll our sleeves up at.”
