At a Glance
With Aston Villa and Southampton separated by just goal difference, this a crucial clash as both teams look to climb the Premier League table.
Dean Smith’s men scored more and conceded less than Saturday’s visitors to Villa Park, but both sides have identical records in terms of wins, draws and defeats and sit level on 15 points from their 17 games so far.
This will be the first Premier League meeting between the two sides since April 2016, when a Southampton side including Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mané were 4-2 winners at Villa Park, with Ashley Westwood scoring both goals for Villa.
Villa will be looking to build on the 5-0 win over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, while Southampton are aiming to bounce back from a disappointing 1-0 home defeat against West Ham United.
Keinan Davis has stepped up his training and is building his fitness, while Tyrone Mings is pain-free but not yet available for a return to match action following the hamstring injury that he suffered against Leicester City two weeks ago.
Jed Steer is no longer wearing a protective boot, but he remains a long-term absentee.
Dean Smith believes that Villa Park can play a crucial role during an important run…
“We’ve come through a tough fixture list and now we’re coming up against teams that are in and around us.
I said to the players at the start of the season that Villa Park is massive for us, the results and the performances that we get there.
Our supporters have been fantastic and with the exception of Leicester City, nobody has had an easy ride at Villa Park.
To come out of the Sheffield United game knowing you’ve got Liverpool, Southampton and Norwich at home gives everybody confidence.
If we win tomorrow, the world will look a different place.”
