Story in brief
Aston Villa and Manchester United played out an entertaining 2-2 draw at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Jack Grealish put Villa 1-0 up in spectacular style early on, curling home beautifully from the left hand side.
A Tom Heaton own goal and a Victor Lindelöf header turned the game around for the hosts, but Tyrone Mings volleyed home to ensure the spoils were shared.
The result maintains Villa's unbeaten run, and keeps them in 15th place.
Villa took the lead in spectacular style on 11 minutes.
Grealish picked up a stray cross on the left-hand side before cutting in-field and curling a beautiful strike into David de Gea’s far corner to draw first blood.
The goal, which left the Spanish ‘keeper completely stranded, was more than worthy of the occasion.
United drew level just before the break, as Marcus Rashford’s close-range header came off the inside of the post before bouncing in off Heaton.
Fred’s in-swinging ball from the right was met at the back post by Lindelof to complete United's turnaround on 64 minutes and give them the lead.
Villa got themselves back on level terms two minutes later, however, when Matt Targett’s scooped ball over the top of the United defence was volleyed home superbly by Mings.
Both sides strived for a late winner, but honours would be even on the final whistle, as Villa now look ahead to another couple of pivotal games this week.
Super Jack
Villa's captain made a welcome return from injury with a superb display on Monday night, and he carried that momentum with him into Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old was not fazed by the occasion, and sent the away fans into delirium with a goal-of-the-season contender in front of the Stretford End.
Grealish looked dangerous every time he got on the ball, and was fouled a game-high seven times by United.
Mings' maiden goal
Tyrone Mings has won the Villa fans over since the middle of last season with his defensive prowess, but he got himself on the scoresheet for the first time in the Premier League on Sunday.
Dean Smith's side had fallen behind two minutes before, but Villa went in search of an instant response.
They found just that, when Matt Targett lofted the ball over a high United line, which Mings watched all the way onto his foot before lashing home.
The initial celebration was muted, such is the uncertainty surrounding VAR these days, but the goal was awarded moments later and was greeted by jubilation.
What Smith said...
Dean Smith addressed the media following Sunday's 2-2 draw with Manchester United.
On coming away with a point...
“I’m probably a little bit frustrated, because our first-half performance was very good, aside from their goal. It was a spirited display.”
On Jack Grealish
“It was a super goal, it’s what I come to expect. It was a shame that Anwar (El Ghazi) had to go off, because he set up the goal.”
On Grealish's England hopes
“If he keeps performing, then he just keeps putting more pressure on those that pick the squads.”
