Aston Villa Women are looking to keep up the pace at the top of the FA Women’s Championship when they return to Boldmere St Michaels on Sunday (12pm KO).
Here are 5 reasons why you should be in the crowd to support Gemma Davies and her squad against Lewes.
1] Eight is great
Aston Villa have navigated through their first seven league games with six wins and one draw.
And they know they need to keep winning in a ferociously competitive division where only one team is promoted at the end of the season.
Extending their unbeaten run to eight games against Lewes would be another step in the right direction.
2] Home is where the heart is
Aston Villa have lost only once at Boldmere St Michaels in 2019.
That run spans 12 matches, with the only defeat coming against top tier West Ham United in last season’s FA Cup.
This season, Davies and her team have won four of their five home matches and they’ll be looking to pick up another three points on Sunday.
3] Goal Scorers
Villa’s array of attacking talent has seen them net 22 times in seven league matches.
That tally makes them the second highest scorers in the Championship, trailing the 26 scored by Sheffield United.
The Women have great depth in attacking positions and any combination they field on Sunday will be capable of finding a route to goal.
4] Close call
Lewes and Villa couldn’t be separated on the two occasions they played last season, drawing both matches.
Villa were particularly aggrieved when they threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 in The Midlands earlier this year.
The hosts know they’ll have to be at their best to ensure there’s no repeat of last season’s stalemates.
5] Half century for Rogers
Sian Rogers will play her 50th game for Aston Villa if she’s selected on Sunday.
The goalkeeper has progressed a tremendous amount since her arrival from Arsenal two years ago, becoming one of the league’s top stoppers.
Reaching the milestone is a great achievement for Rogers and is testament to her consistency between the posts.
