Story in brief

It was the perfect start for our U18s as they began their league campaign but with a 3-2 away victory at Southampton – although it was tense at the finish.

Played at the Staplewood Training Complex, the claret and blues held on for the three points against a strong Saints side, who finished the previous campaign superbly with five victories in their final seven games to secure fourth spot in the southern division.

It was looking very rosy as first half goals from Mamadou Dialla Sylla and Jaden Philogene-Bidace as well as a third just past the hour mark from Aaron Pressley put us three to the good.

And it stayed that way heading into the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Late goals from Benni Smales-Braithwaite and Roland Idowu made it a nervy finish but we made it to the final whistle with the lead intact.

Next up

It’s an exciting home clash with Arsenal coming up on the calendar.

We face the Gunners on Saturday 17th August, with a 12pm kick-off at Bodymoor Heath.

We went down 2-0 in the corresponding fixture last time out so our Young Lions will be eager to continue momentum.
