John McGinn accepted that the team’s return to the Premier League was a “massive step up” but said there were definitely positives to take despite the defeat.

The claret and blues conceded two late goals to fall 3-1 to Tottenham.

It was hard on the team who battled valiantly throughout and who led for a long spell.

But McGinn, who bagged our goal on the day, said it was important to keep our heads up.

It’s a steep learning curve. But we have our first home game of the season next weekend and that’s what we need to focus on now. John McGinn
He said: “It’s a massive step up for us. We can’t get away from that.

“The tempo and intensity and physicality are a big step up.

“Over the piece, I think we gave a good account of ourselves but we know we need to improve on the ball and be a little braver in this league.

“We got punished for little things. The ball ended up going to Harry Kane and he’s the last guy you want it to go to.

“It’s a steep learning curve. But we have our first home game of the season next weekend and that’s what we need to focus on now.

“We had confidence heading into this one. I think it’s just an eye opener, especially in the second half, that the jump up to the Premier League is massive.

“But we do take positives. We will debrief it on Monday, work hard next week and then take it from there.”

On his opener, he added: “It was a nice feeling.

“I just gambled and managed to get the touch away from the defender and put it in the corner which was a real personal highlight for me.

“But I’d have swapped it every day for the right result.”
