Dean Smith: Why Tom Heaton is so important for us

Dean Smith insists that Tom Heaton’s big experience and leadership qualities will be vital in an emerging, evolving Aston Villa squad.

Smith has been thrilled with the transfer business done this summer, as he thanked the owners for their big backing.

He has been delighted with the young, talented nucleus that’s been assembled – and believes that Heaton’s knowhow will serve the claret and blues well.

He said: “I thought Tom was just what we needed.

“We’ve recruited very well with players who have a lot of hunger and drive to do well.

“Tom gives us that experience but he has also got that personality of a leader in and around the dressing room – and one I thought would do well for us.

“I’m very surprised that we managed to get Tom. He’s been a very successful keeper for Burnley.

“He played the last 19 games and was pivotal in their resurgence in the league.

“He had an injury the season before. You look at the media reaction of the opposition fans and you realise you have a very good signing – when they’re very disappointed that he’s left.”

Smith also discussed his other newest arrivals, Trezeguet and Marvelous.

He added: “With Trezeguet, Suso and I went out to Egypt to watch him in the AFCON. We really liked him. We spoke to him. He has a real hunger and desire to come and do well and prove to everyone he’s a Premier League player.

"He’s fitted in really well so far. He knows Elmo at the football club so that integration has been quite easy.

“Marvelous? What a wonderful name to have. I’ve kidded my wife on and told her that his brother is called Tremendous.

"He’s a lovely lad. He’s another one we’ve looked at quite a lot. I’ve been watching Bjorn Engels when I was at Brentford so I’ve watched Club Brugge play a number of times when he was there. But also when we were watching Wesley, we also saw Marvelous in the same team.

"I’ve seen a lot of the two of them and we were fortunate to get both of those deals done.”
