Story in brief

Aston Villa swept to their second big pre-season victory of the week as they demolished Charlton Athletic 4-1 at The Valley.

Anwar El Ghazi got us off the mark in the first half, finishing off a brilliant end-to-end move to poke home after a neat dink through from Jack Grealish.

The floodgates then opened after the break, with Andre Green doubling our advantage following another crisp move up field.

John McGinn took centre stage shortly after, striking from the edge of the box for Villa's third before magnificently dribbling through to fire home and cap an entertaining afternoon of football.

Scintillating football

After a five-star performance at Walsall in midweek, Villa were at the races again in London on Saturday – giving us a mouthwatering taste of what they could be capable of this season.

The attacking trio of Trezeguet, Grealish and El Ghazi had all 3,000 travelling Villans on their feet throughout the first half, with the latter pair unlocking the door for our first goal brilliantly.

The desire of McGinn then started another great move for our second, as Grealish once again turned provider – this time for Green.

Jota entered the fray in the second half to inject further class in attack, while Frederic Guilbert continued to look a real force down the right side.

One thing is for certain – it won't be dull under Dean Smith this season.

Trezeguet arrives

Following his arrival at the club earlier this week, we saw Egyptian signing Trezeguet in action for the first time.

He started on the right of an attacking three behind Keinan Davis, and quickly displayed glimpses of the quality he possesses.

Working in front of and alongside countryman Ahmed Elmohamady at right-back, Trezeguet produced moments of magical skill to skip past his markers and put Villa on the front foot.

Exciting times lie ahead with players of his ilk now through the door.

Next up

We fly to Germany next weekend to take on RB Leipzig in our final pre-season friendly of the summer.

Then, it's all eyes on the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday 10th August, as Aston Villa make their Premier League return in front of the watching world.
