Dean Smith has spoken on record for the first time about new loan signing Tyrone Mings.

The Head Coach has just finished his weekly press conference, where the capture of the defender was high on the agenda.

Smith said: "I'm very pleased. He's an important cog in the team for us now.

"We wanted to readdress the balance, and bringing Tyrone in gives us to left-footed centre backs – and one who can play left back.

"We've got better cover now and a number of options. We needed to address that balance.

"He fits the profile and is a player I've known for quite a long time. I've had some really good character references on him.

"He's athletic, he's quick and is a Premier League player. The fit is good. He's at the right age and is available straight away."

TalkSPORT: Tyrone Mings is expected to complete a deadline day move to Aston Villa. The Bournemouth defender has played just five Premier League games so far this season, and his opportunities have been further limited following the arrival of Chris Mepham. Eddie Howe has now sanctioned Mings’ exit, with the 25-year-old joining Championship club Villa on loan for the rest of the season.

Daily Mirror: Aston Villa are loaning Scott Hogan to Sheffield United but have told Keinan Davis he is staying. Big-money hitman Hogan, 26, is due to go to Championship promotion-chasers United today on loan for the rest of the season. He has scored 10 goals in 61 games since a £9m move from Brentford in January 2017. But Villa boss Dean Smith has since told Davis, 20, to stay put despite only making one sub appearance this term.

Daily Star: Aston Villa are set to sign Tyrone Mings on loan until the end of the season. The left-back has struggled for regular playing time this season and has started just twice in the Premier League. The 25-year-old completed a medical at Villa last night and the transfer will be announced today.

Birmingham Mail: Aston Villa are working on deals to bring three new players to the club before tonight's 11pm deadline. Tyrone Mings is expected to be the first player through the door and two others are likely to follow. Isaac Hayden is also on the radar and Villa are considering a move for Charlie Austin.

Express & Star: Villa have entered the final hours of the transfer window still hopeful of securing a loan swoop for Newcastle midfielder Isaac Hayden. The 23-year-old has emerged as a prime target for Dean Smith and a deal could be struck if the Magpies complete the signing of Benfica’s Andreas Samaris. Villa have also made an approach for Watford’s Nathaniel Chalobah, though their chances of landing the England international appeared relatively slim on Wednesday. Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings is expected to be the first player through the door, with Villa last in on a loan deal until the end of the season.

Daily Mail: Aston Villa are leading the hunt to sign Tyrone Mings on loan from Bournemouth and hopeful of completing the deal on deadline day. Eddie Howe will let the defender leave for the rest of the campaign for a £1m fee and Villa are in prime position. Nottingham Forest have also registered a strong interest but look set to be disappointed. West Bromwich Albion had been in contention too while Frank Lampard said Derby had been priced out.

Daily Express: Aston Villa are set to sign Bournemouth defender Tyrone Mings on loan. The full-back has also attracted the interest of West Brom and Derby this window.

Bournemouth Daily Echo: Cherries defender Tyrone Mings is on the verge of a deadline day move to Aston Villa. The Daily Echo understands the Championship club are set to sign Mings on loan until the end of the season. It is believed a medical took place last night and the deal should be completed later today. The move is understood to be a loan with no option to buy in the summer.
