Analysis

Villa ran out comfortable 3-0 winners against Telford United at New Bucks Head in the first of the club's two opening pre-season friendlies.

Jonathan Kodjia scored twice and assisted one to mark a bright start to the new campaign.

He headed in from close range on both occasions, before teeing up Conor Hourihane inside the box to seal a comprehensive victory.

Kodjia back among the goals

The Ivorian striker was blighted by injury throughout the 2017/18 campaign, hence only getting on the scoresheet once in a 1-0 home win against Bolton Wanderers.

But he looked sharp in pre-season camp out in Portugal this week, and followed up with a brace to confirm it on Saturday.

He converted both headers from Ritchie De Laet crosses, before finding team-mate Hourihane in space for our third goal.

Who else shone?

Full-backs Mitch Clark and James Bree both had promising first outings this pre-season, as did De Laet, who was pushed up into right midfield for the majority of the match.

That decision proved justified, with the Belgian twice putting the ball on a plate for Kodjia to head home.

Andre Green also went well on his maiden first-team appearance of 2018, turning opposition defenders inside-out on several occasions.

What next?

We now go to Walsall on Tuesday, where Steve Bruce will likely select a combined side from the one that beat Telford and also drew at Kidderminster Harriers on Saturday.

Then, it's off to Burton Albion next weekend, before facing West Ham United and later German side Dynamo Dresden.

Our first Sky Bet Championship match of the season is away at Hull City three weeks on Monday.
