Analysis

Aston Villa U23s moved to within four points of leaders Blackburn Rovers at the top of Premier League 2 Division 2 after an eighth successive victory in all competitions.

Jordan Lyden scored the only goal of the game at Ewood Park to close the gap to Rovers with just two regular season matches remaining.

Villa have a game in hand on their rivals and need to take maximum points in their remaining fixtures to be in with a chance of finishing first and earning automatic promotion.

That meant their Monday night tie in Lancashire was a must-win, and the Young Lions duly ground out a result with hosts enjoying the better of the play.

Lyden struck in the final minute of the first half with a well-taken volley to eventually earn all three points.

Keinan Davis came closest to adding to our tally in the second period – crashing a low-driven effort against the post.

But it was all credit to Matija Sarkic and his defenders, who fought valiantly to deny Rovers and keep the claret and blues in with a shot of the title.

Line-up

VILLA: Sarkic, Borg, Bedeau, Suliman, Clark, Doyle-Hayes, Clarke, Lyden, O'Hare, Hepburn-Murphy, Davis. SUBS: Walker, Abdo, Prosser, Blackett-Taylor, Mooney.
