Jonathan Kodjia is set for surgery later this week.
Steve Bruce revealed in his press conference that Kodjia had seen specialists over the past few days – and will now have an operation on his injured ankle.
He described the update as “the worst possible news”.
He also gave an update on Scott Hogan and John Terry.
Hogan, he said, could be out for up to a month while Terry is continuing to make good progress.
He told us: “Kodjia will probably have an operation later this week.
“It’s the worst possible news we could have. But it’s football.
“We have been dealt some cruel ones over the last few weeks. We have managed to cope.
“Hopefully we will do that again until January. Then we will see if we can do something to try and help the team and squad.
“We won’t have millions with FFP but we signed Snodgrass, Onomah and Johnstone on loan. You don’t have to spend millions. That’s what we will try and find.
“JT is plodding along – it’s just time for him. He’s now three weeks in.
“Scott had an abdominal blockage. He’s fine but he’s had an internal operation. We have to be patient. I would think he will be another three or four weeks.”
