Villa’s six-match unbeaten run came to an end as Middlesbrough progressed to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win in B6.
A brace from Patrick Bamford settled the tie, as the claret and blues also saw Tommy Elphick red carded on the hour.
Elphick brought down Bamford in the penalty area to receive his second caution of the match – the Boro striker then converted the resulting spot-kick.
Ten minutes later, Bamford was in the thick of it again – this time looping a headed effort over Jed Steer to make it 2-0.
Solid performances from Young Lions Jake Doyle-Hayes and Callum O’Hare provided positives, as did Corey Blackett Taylor, who made his first senior appearance at Villa Park.
Meanwhile, Henri Lansbury and Scott Hogan are the fresh injury concerns ahead of the visit of Nottingham Forest in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday with knee and ankle issues respectively.
