Villa were made to settle for a point against Middlesbrough – despite a host of chances to pick up all three.
It came on a dramatic night of two red cards – one for either side.
Boro were down to 10 men on four minutes, following ex-Villa man Adama Traore's tackle on Conor Hourihane.
Numbers were evened up just after the hour mark when Henri Lansbury also received a straight red for tripping Boro's Marvin Johnson.
It was a night of missed opportunities for the claret and blues as several efforts went astray.
In the first half, Birkir Bjarnason headed over from two yards out but it was after the break that the game heated up.
Boro survived an amazing double let-off which saw returning Jonathan Kodjia’s header saved by Darren Randolph before Hourihane’s follow-up shot was blocked on the line by his own team-mate Scott Hogan.
Robert Snodgrass also went unbelievably close when his effort crashed against the bar.
