Scoring summary

No goals

On a rain-soaked night, Villa were left frustrated by a second successive 0-0 home draw with both sides finishing the game with 10 men.

Former Villa man, Adama Traore, lunged in on Conor Hourihane as the midfielder looked to break away on the left-hand side.

Traore caught the Irishman and was shown a straight red card for the challenge.

Cue a siege on the Boro goal from the men in claret and blue.

The returning Mile Jedinak headed at Darren Randolph before the keeper was on hand to keep out Robert Snodgrass twice.

AdomahPostBoroMainWebHourihane also arrowed a shot over the bar before Birkir Bjarnason’s close-range header missed the target.

After the break, Villa came flying out of the traps and could have broken the deadlock when Albert Adomah’s cross was spilled by Randolph. The ball fell to Snodgrass who crashed an effort off the underside of the crossbar.

The numbers were evened up just after the hour mark when Henri Lansbury saw red for a tackle from behind on Marvin Johnson.

Energised by the red card, Britt Assombalonga saw a snapshot smartly turned behind by Johnstone.

The returning Jonathan Kodjia was next to be denied by Randolph who reacted well to keep out his header. The rebound fell to Hourihane who smashed in a volley that hit Scott Hogan inside the six-yard box that agonisingly prevented it from going in.

With virtually the last kick of the game, Snodgrass’s corner was sent deep to the far post where Hourihane’s connection put it wide of goal.
