Villa endured a frustrating afternoon in B6, being held to a 0-0 draw by Brentford.

James Chester was denied from close range and Sam Johnstone produced three first class saves to keep out the Bees but neither side could find a way to break the deadlock.

After Conor Hourihane’s early cross was cut-out, Andre Green’s low centre from a similar position found Josh Onomah inside the box but he could only scuff his left-footed shot wide.

John Terry nodded Hourihane’s corner wide under pressure before Keinan Davis twice fired off target.

In between times, Neal Maupay’s jinking run into the box ended with him finding the site netting instead of the back of the net.

Before the interval, the visitors’ Romaine Sawyers lifted a shot over the cross bar and into the Holte End.

Villa created the first chance of the second half but Ahmed Elmohamady couldn’t keep his header down after being picked out by Green’s cross.

Largely untroubled in the first 45, Sam Johnstone then produced a string of fine saves to keep the scoreline at 0-0.

Firstly, he stood up well to save with his feet and keep out Josh Clarke one-on-one, before keeping out Ollie Watkins with two fine diving saves.

The on-loan Manchester United man was also called upon to smartly pouch Yoann Barbet’s fizzing free-kick.

Robert Snodgrass was introduced from the substitutes’ bench to make his first appearance in claret and blue.

His cross from the right came through to Chester at the far post but the ball wouldn’t drop kindly for the defender and his close-range volley was smothered by a covering defender.
