Villa’s pre-season preparations continued with a 0-0 draw at Walsall with neither side able to make the crucial breakthrough at the Banks’s Stadium.
Gabriel Agbonlahor and Jordan Amavi both had sights of goal in the first half for the visitors - the former firing over the top after being teed up by Andre Green before the latter forced a save from Mark Gillespie at his near post.
The hosts could have opened the scoring when Amadou Bakayoko found himself through on goal but dragged his effort wide of the target.
At the other end, Birkir Bjarnason nodded off target from Neil Taylor’s cross then fired at Gillespie on the turn moments later.
Before the half was over, John Terry had the ball in the back of the net, heading in Conor Hourihane’s precise centre, but the effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
With both sides exchanging periods of pressure and possession after the break, Amavi volleyed over after a corner had dropped to him in the box while the Saddlers’ Joe Edwards – who had drilled wide in the first half – drifted in off the left flank and sent a fizzing effort the wrong side of the upright.
In injury time, with Villa battling for a winner, the ball broke for Jordan Lyden on the right hand channel of the box but, with a number of red shirts in front of him, his goal-bound half-volley was blocked behind.
