Steve Bruce has spoken of his “shock and devastation” at the death of former Villa defender Ugo Ehiogu.
Ehiogu passed away at the age of 44 in the early hours of this morning after suffering a cardiac arrest at Tottenham's training centre yesterday.
Bruce, talking in his pre-match press conference, was glowing in his praise for Ehiogu the man and Ehiogu the player.
Big Ron, I believe, bought him for £45,000 – what a bargain that was.
He said: “We are all shocked and devastated by the news – and someone so young.
“He was quietly making a name for himself as a talented coach.
“I played against him and watched him play for many, many years.
“Big Ron, I believe, bought him for £45,000 – what a bargain that was.
“I had so much admiration for him as a fellow centre-half. He was uncompromising, quick and gave his all every single week – he was a great defender.
"All the football world will be saddened.
“Of course, in these moments you think of his family and all those people around him.
“It’s just terrible news – and football is so trivial at moments like this.”
