Analysis
Jonathan Kodjia’s 11th goal of the season wasn’t enough to prevent Villa slipping to a second home defeat in the space of four days.
After Steve Bruce’s men had created a number of early chances, notably a rising Albert Adomah drive which keeper Adam Davies tipped over, the visitors went ahead on 25 minutes, Adam Armstrong driving home from the spot after Jordan Amavi had tripped Marley Watkins.
Barnsley doubled their lead two minutes before the interval, Tom Bradshaw flicking home a low cross from the right, although home hopes were raised when Kodjia halved the deficit almost immediately with an angled shot following Alan Hutton’s deep cross.
Kodjia was close again with a shot which was narrowly off target early in the second half, only for Bradshaw to claim his second with a low left-foot drive in the 58th minute.
This time the two-goal margin was too much of a hurdle, despite decent efforts by Hutton, sub Andre Green and Kodjia, who lifted his shot on to the roof of the net.
