Breaking news: Birkir Bjarnason joins Villa

Aston Villa is delighted to announce the signing of Birkir Bjarnason.

The 28-year-old midfielder arrives at the club on a three-and-a-half-year deal and joins us from FC Basel for an undisclosed fee.

Bjarnason, an Icelandic international, has also represented Viking, Standard Liege, Pescara and Sampdoria at club level.

He was a member of Basel’s Swiss Super League title-winning squad in 2015/16 and was a key part of the Iceland team that reached the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 – scoring his country’s first-ever goal in a major tournament against Portugal.

He said: “I’m delighted to have signed for Aston Villa.

“It’s a very big club. I am now looking forward to getting out on to the pitch and helping the team.”
