Two quick-fire goals at the end of the opening 45 minutes sealed third round FA Youth Cup progression for Villa’s youngsters against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.
Jordan Cox opened the scoring six minutes shy of the interval before Jack Clarke doubled the lead two minutes later.
In what was an even opening, winger Cox embarked on a fine run down the left, whipped in a cross searching for the onrushing Kelsey Mooney but Lloyd Kelly was able to hack clear.
At the other end, substitute Jayden Ali, introduced a quarter of an hour in due to an injury sustained by Opi Edwards forced Viktor Johansson into a routine save.
There was a let off for Villa 34 minutes in – George Dowling striking the crossbar with a well-executed free-kick from 30 yards, Mitch Clark able to clear at the second attempt.
The claret and blues drew first blood, though – Cox working his way into the Bristol box and thumping a shot past goalkeeper James Carey.
Clearly lifted by their opener, the visiting Villans charged forward and doubled their lead moments later.
Right-back Clark’s cross was headed across goal by Cox – Clarke prodded in from a yard out.
Villa started the second period in the way they finished the first, going close with efforts from Alex Prosser and Jake Doyle-Hayes.
With just under 20 minutes of the regulation 90 remaining, Johannson made his first notable save, denying Harrison Reeves.
Cox continued to threaten down the flank and after showing good skills and trickery, forced Carey to push the ball clear.
The home stopper was called into action again – acrobatically thwarting Doyle-Hayes’ fine free-kick to keep the scores at two.
