Steve Bruce reflected on the arrival of Colin Calderwood as his new assistant manager and revealed he’s the perfect fit – literally!
Bruce says he couldn’t have picked anyone better for the role after seeing the Scot join him as No.2.
However the boss admits the rest of the coaching staff are being put to shame by Calderwood’s exercise regime at the training ground during time between first team sessions.
He said: “I know one thing – you don’t want to go in the gym with him! You feel totally inadequate.
“He’s doing one of these Ironman things. He runs and cycles and swims. I look on aghast.
I am so pleased I waited so long to make an appointment.
Bruce on Calderwood
“I join in a little but I make sure I’m not in the gym while he’s there.
“I’ve got to say, he’s a really top, top class. He’s a great coach.
“I am so pleased I waited so long to make an appointment. I don’t think I could have made a better one.
“In the time he’s been here, he’s freshened me up. That’s important. Sometimes the manager needs freshening up.
“I have new ideas now with the likes of Colin and Steven, which I am delighted with.”
