Match: Barnsley v Villa
Date: September 27, 2016
Competition: Sky Bet Championship
Weather: 16C, partially cloudy
Jordan Ayew (61 mins)
Sam Winnall (89 mins)
There was more late heartbreak for Villa, who were denied victory by Sam Winnall’s last-gasp goal at Oakwell.
Jordan Ayew’s opener looked to have secured the three points for the claret and blues before the Tykes levelled in the dying embers.
Both teams pressed high up the field and were committed in their approach throughout.
A quarter of an hour in, Jonathan Kodjia stung the gloves of Adam Davies, the Barnsley stopper able to gather at the second attempt.
Pierluigi Gollini was called into action soon after – saving down low from Conor Hourihane’s free-kick.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side began to dictate play and won a number of free-kicks – Mile Jedinak close to meeting an inswinger.
They were then quick out of the traps as the second period got underway and carved a succession of chances.
Aaron Tshibola was a real driving force in the middle of the park and his persistence almost fashioned an opener – the former Reading man fired an effort over the bar following a rebound in the penalty area.
They took a deserved lead on 61 minutes – the lively Ayew firing into the bottom corner.
Roared on by their vocal away following, the visitors continued to attack – Kodjia with a header which was straight into the arms of Davies.
To their credit, Paul Heckingbottom’s men kept pushing and Winnall headed home Cole Kpekawa’s knockdown from a corner.
