Villa had to settle for a point after Ross McCormack’s first goal for the club was cancelled out by a freak equaliser when Pierluigi Gollini’s 81st-minute clearance hit sub Michael Hefele and bounced into the net.
A storming start saw Jordan Ayew force keeper Danny Ward into a fingertip save after just 35 seconds as Villa dominated from the outset and it was no surprise when the home side went ahead on 25 minutes.
Leandro Bacuna’s deep cross from the right was hooked back across the face of goal and converted by McCormack.
Ayew almost made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time with a shot that was cleared off the line by Mark Hudson, but the visitors were on top in the second half.
Gollini saved brilliantly from Elias Kachanga and twice from sub Nahki Wells, who also hit the post with a free-kick before Hefele grabbed the equaliser with his first touch of the ball.
