Roberto Di Matteo spoke to the press following Villa’s opening day defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Check out his thoughts on a host of topics below.

On today’s game…

It's disappointing, the way we conceded so late.

Once you get to ten minutes to go away from home against a team like Sheffield Wednesday you would like to see the game out and not really give them the opportunity to score.

If they are going to score you would like to see them do something special rather than give the goal away.

We defended well as a team, all in all, in the second half we played well as a team and created some very good opportunities.

I think we have seen some good, positive signs. There is a good group together that wants to do well. Roberto Di Matteo

We had a big chance with Ross McCormack going one-on-one with the keeper. He took another touch and wanted to chip the goalkeeper. This is how it is.

You don’t score and you get one in.

I think we have seen some good, positive signs. There is a good group together that wants to do well.

We put them under pressure and we dominated the second half.

On the deciding goal…

There is no need for Pierluigi Gollini to apologise.

He gets the ball back and is just looking to clear it. It wasn't as clear as we would like to be but it is our mistake and we will learn from it and move on.

He wanted to kick long and miskicked. It wasn’t a great ball back to him either.

It is what it is. We win together and we lose together.

On positive signs…

It is going to take time to work with this team but the second half was very good.

It is just small details that make the difference. We knew that.

The players gave everything today. They ran, fought and we all wanted to get a result.

It is just a shame we gave it away rather than them earning it.

On Sheffield Wednesday…

You can see they have been together for a year.

They caused us some problems with their play and rotation in midfield.

Once we got into the game we caused them problems as well and created opportunities.

I was pleased with the defending all in all because you need to defend well but the late goal just killed us.

I think the whole team has to play together, when they understand the way we want them to play they will get better.

You can see Sheffield Wednesday are a good team.

On the fans…

We had some great support today.

We have a fantastic fanbase and I think they realised the players were giving everything today.

We just want to get a win as soon as possible to have a bit of a good feeling and a confidence boost as well.

On potential signings..

We are still in the transfer market and looking to add to the squad as well.

It’s difficult to say how different the team will look in a month.

It depends on the amount of players coming in or going out.

I think we have a good core now.

ElphickPostOwlsMainOn Tommy Elphick’s injury...

He got a big knock on it. We will just assess him.

The doctor went on to the pitch to assess him and he was looked over at half-time too.

On the character within the group…

We were all disappointed because we gave away a game which we could have won but shouldn’t lose.

We will learn from this experience.

There are so many more games to come.

If we take our chances and play like we did in the second half we will get some wins.

I thought all the players really dug in and were fighting.

It is not just individual players but the group.

We have shown a good resilience today as well.
