Villa's unbeaten pre-season sequence came to an end as they slipped up at home to Premier League new boys Middlesbrough.
Roberto Di Matteo’s side dominated the first half and deservedly went ahead when defender Nathan Baker climbed at the far post to head Leandro Bacuna’s cross past new Boro keeper Victor Valdes.
The former Barcelona keeper also saved well from Jordan Ayew and Alan Hutton, while skipper Tommy Elphick headed over.
But Boro drew level on the hour through on-loan Valencia striker Alvaro Negredo and added further goals from Viktor Fischer and sub Jordan Rhodes.
