Fixtures 2016/17: Season starts with trip to Sheffield Wednesday

Villa open up the 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season away at Sheffield Wednesday.

Roberto Di Matteo will take charge of his first competitive game for his new Club at Hillsborough.

It’s a tough opener, with the Owls a step away from the Premier League last time out – losing in the play-off final to Hull at Wembley.

It also means a claret and blue reunion for Barry Bannan, who is now turning out for the Yorkshire outfit after nine years in B6.

The game has been selected for Sky Sports coverage and will kick-off at 4.30pm on Sunday August 7.

Our home opener is against Rotherham United on Saturday August 13, followed by another B6 clash against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday August 16.

In other highlights, we face Birmingham City away on Saturday October 29 and at home on Saturday April 22.

We take on Wolves in B6 on Saturday October 15 and away at Molineux on Saturday January 14.

Our festive calendar sees us host Burton Albion on Boxing Day, take on Leeds United at home on New Year’s Eve and Cardiff City away on Monday January 2.

We conclude what we hope will be a promotion term at home to Tommy Elphick’s former club Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday May 7.
