Story in brief

Villa had to settle for a point in an entertaining goalless encounter at Reading.

Tommy Elphick hit the woodwork while Tammy Abraham was denied from close range but neither side was able to break the deadlock at the Madejski Stadium.

Abraham saw an early turn and shot well held by Emiliano Martinez in the Reading goal before heading just wide after the stopper had pushed away Anwar El Ghazi’s curling effort.

Albert Adomah wriggled his way into the box and was denied at the near post by Martinez while Elphick rattled the crossbar with a header from a corner in what was Villa’s best chance of the half.

Lovre Kalinic turned away Nelson Oliveira’s snapshot with a smart save before producing an even better stop on the stroke of half-time, pawing away Liam Moore’s header.

The claret and blues were quickly out of the blocks at the start of the second half with Neil Taylor skewing a cross-shot across the face of goal and wide and Glenn Whelan sending a volley off target.

Adomah then nodded a Hourihane cross over the angle of bar and post.Searching for his 20th goal of the season, Abraham must have been wondering how he hadn’t hit the back of the net when he got his head to El Ghazi’s teasing cross. Making a firm connection, Martinez somehow got a hand to the ball to keep it out.

In stoppage time, Jonathan Kodia’s snapshot from distance whistled across goal and wide of the target as neither side could find a way through.

Debut boys

Two of our deadline day arrivals made their Villa debuts at the Madejski Stadium.

Tyrone Mings was named in the starting line-up alongside Tommy Elphick in the back four while Tom Carroll stepped off the bench in the second half, replacing Glenn Whelan with a little over 15 minutes to play.

Up next

Villa are back in action next Friday evening when Sheffield United are the visitors to Villa Park in a televised fixture at B6.
