Story in brief

After an FA Cup exit last weekend, Villa returned to league action at Wigan, going down 3-0 at the DW Stadium.

Goals from Gary Roberts, Michael Jacobs and Joe Garner did the damage as the claret and blues slipped to their first league defeat since before Christmas.

On his league debut for Villa, Lovre Kalinic was called into action very early on to push away Joe Garner’s volley from close range. Minutes later, at the other end, an error at the back for the hosts afforded Tammy Abraham a shot on goal but he skewed wide.

Yannick Bolasie followed suit later in the half after dancing away from two defenders before slicing high and wide.

SmithWiganIt was the home side who would head into the break with the advantage. After Cedric Kipre had thundered a header inches wide earlier in proceedings, Wigan took the lead through Gary Roberts.

Kalinic produced a remarkable save to deny Garner but when the ball was recycled, Roberts was on hand to slam home the opener.

It was the hosts who picked up where they left off after the break with Josh Windass blasting wide before later volleying into the ground and straight at Kalinic.

With 15 minutes to play, Wigan doubled their advantage through substitute, Michael Jacobs. A deep corner was swung back into the box where the midfielder arrived at the far post with a diving header to bury it into the corner.

On 83 minutes, Wigan made it three courtesy of a Joe Garner penalty. The frontman struck his effort confidently into the corner despite Kalinic diving the right way and getting a glove on the spot kick.
