Scoring summary

Mackie 18

Adomah (p) 45+2, 58

Albert Adomah’s brace either side of the half-time interval was enough to secure a 2-1 win for Villa at QPR.

After Jamie Mackie had given the hosts the lead, Adomah’s penalty right on half-time coupled with a well-taken second sealed three points for Steve Bruce’s men.

Villa began brightly on a dark and drizzly afternoon in west London with Conor Hourihane whistling a shot just wide of the upright.

After a spell of Villa pressure, the hosts took the lead through Jamie Mackie on 18 minutes.

The striker was in the right place inside the six-yard box to stab the ball in from close range after Villa couldn’t clear their lines from a corner.

Albert Adomah then spurned a glorious opportunity to level matters but couldn’t steer his effort inside the far post after being set free.

Even when Villa did hit the target, Alex Smithies in the QPR goal was determined to keep out the visitors, Josh Onomah and Keinan Davis most notably.

With the first half edging towards the end of the allotted stoppage time, Robert Snodgrass was deemed to have been stopped by Jack Robinson’s hand en route to goal and Villa were awarded a penalty.

Adomah took responsibility from the spot, cooly steeping up and sending the ball high into the roof of the net to equalise.

Both sides could have scored within the opening 90 seconds of the second half: firstly, Matt Smith’s acrobatic volley was straight at Sam Johnstone then moments later, Davis’ header down from Alan Hutton’s ball in bounced just wide.

Having drawn Villa level at the end of the first half, Albert Adomah grabbed his second of the game just before the hour mark.

Teed up by Hourihane on the left-hand edge of the box, his low effort struck the foot of the upright before nestling in the back of the net to seal all three points for the visitors.
