Scoring summary

Jansson 19

Lansbury 71

Henri Lansbury’s first goal in claret and blue secured a point for Villa in an entertaining 1-1 draw at Leeds United.

The midfielder came off the bench to strike at Elland Road after Pontus Jansson had headed the home side in front.

On a chilly evening in Yorkshire, both sides exchanged half-chances in the early part of the game: Albert Adomah lashing a shot at Felix Wiedwald in the Leeds goal and Robert Snodgrass twice finding the ‘keeper’s gloves before Kalvin Phillips and Pablo Hernandez both fired over for the hosts.

On 19 minutes, it was Leeds’ Jansson who cut through the chill and warmed the majority of those inside Elland Road by scoring the opening goal.

Hernandez’s curling corner picked out the big defender who glanced home from six yards.

Liam Cooper, his defensive partner spurned a similar opportunity in first half stoppage time while Villa’s best chance fell to Glenn Whelan who ghosted into a shooting position on the edge of the box but planted Keinan Davis’ pass wide.

After a bright start to the second half, Adomah was denied a certain equaliser by Wiedwald after a slip by a Leeds defender.

The chance sparked the game into life once more and the hosts went close to adding a second but no-one could get a touch to Samuel Saiz’s teasing cross.

Moments later, the home side had the ball in the back of the net for a second time but were denied by the linesman’s flag.

However, with 20 minutes to play it was Villa who found a way back into the match courtesy of substitute,

Henri Lansbury. Snaffling up a loose ball 30 yards from goal, he moved into a shooting position before cracking a shot home off the foot of the upright.
