Scoring summary

Kodjia (35, 79)

Analysis

Jonathan Kodjia took his goal haul to 15 as Villa returned to winning ways against promotion-chasing Sheffield Wednesday.

The club’s leading marksman opened the scoring in the 35th minute with a perfect downward header into the bottom corner after James Bree’s pass had set up Conor Hourihane for a fine cross from the right.

And he sealed victory on 79 minutes, skipping past keeper Keiren Westwood to slot home his second after Albert Adomah had opened up the Owls defence with a superb pass.

In between times, the visitors were reduced to 10 men.

Vincent Sasso was sent off just after half-time for a reckless tackle on Hourihane, an incident which also led to Wednesday manager Carlos Carvalhal being ordered from the dug-out.

Even so, Wednesday enjoyed more possession, although Villa still created the better chances, with Bree, Mile Jedinak, Alan Hutton and Hourihane all going close.

The only downside was that Villa’s injury problems intensified.

Henri Lansbury was ruled out during the warm-up, while Nathan Baker went off after just 25 minutes.
