Liam Bateman

Liam Bateman

Liam Bateman made a string of appearances for the U21 and NextGen Series sides in 2012-13.

He was part of the 18-man squad who triumphed at the NextGen finals weekend in Lake Como.

Bateman appeared as a substitute in the 3-1 semi-final victory over Portuguese giants Sporting CP.

The athletic defender is a right-back by trade but has demonstrated his versatility on several occasions by playing on the left hand side of Villa's back four.

Bateman was snapped up from Derby County as a 15-year-old after impressing Villa's talent-spotters with his remarkable athleticism.

He made a handful of appearances in the Barclays Premier Academy League in 2011-12 and found the target on two occasions.

His first goal came in an 11-3 victory over MK Dons in October as Tony McAndrew's team ended a six-match winless run.

Bateman scored again in the penultimate match of the season as the claret and blues defeated Portsmouth 4-0.

The East Londoner is a huge admirer of attacking full-backs such as Daniel Alves and Patrice Evra.
