Joe Bennett spent the whole of the 2014/15 season on loan at Brighton - but the left-back is aiming for a claret and blue future.

Bennett left temporarily for a term with the Seagulls in August 2014 but Tim Sherwood, taking over from the departed Paul Lambert, instructed the press that he was interested in seeing what the defender could do at close quarters.

With the Championship campaign ending a few weeks before the Premier League season ended, Sherwood asked Bennett to return to Bodymoor Heath rather than head off on his summer holidays so he could assess his qualities.

The manager liked what he saw and Bennett is hoping to impress in the long-term for Villa.

Bennett joined Villa in August 2012, after after making 84 starts for Middlesbrough in four years at the Riverside Stadium.

He made his debut in September 2012, coming on as a substitute for Eric Lichaj against Southampton.

Standout moments in that campaign were the 4-2 Capital One Cup win at Man City and the 6-1 win at home to Sunderland as he made 30 appearances.

Bennett was less active in 2013/14 as Lambert brought in Antonio Luna, with the Rochdale-born stopper making only seven appearances, although his display in the 1-0 win over Chelsea earned his much credit.

After a season at Falmer Stadium in 2014/15, he will now look to vie for the left-back spot with Jordan Amavi and Kieran Richardson.

The defender scored his first goal for the club against Notts County in the League Cup in August 2015, an unstoppable long-range strike.

Bennett has been capped at U19, U20 and U21 for England.
