Simon Dawkins will be hoping to force his way back into the first team squad having missed out in recent weeks. He last made the squad for the 1-1 draw with Fulham on April 13, while his last appearance was a cameo in the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in March. WHAT HE SAID I am looking forward to this challenge immensely. The gaffer said to me when I signed 'just express yourself.' He said he wants me to go out there and do what I've been doing for the last two seasons. I play football with a smile on my face and I will be doing that here. WHAT OTHERS SAID Paul Lambert: Simon will give us something a bit different. He will be a surprise to a lot of people - just the way he plays the game. MINI PROFILE Simon Dawkins joined Villa in a late-night deadline day loan deal from Tottenham. Dawkins is contracted to Spurs but has spent the past two seasons at MLS side San Jose Earthquakes. Boss Paul Lambert believes Dawkins can "surprise a few people" during his six-month stay. There's a heart-warming tale behind the football story of Dawkins. The striker re-signed for Tottenham having initially been released at the end of the 2008-09 season following lengthy battles with injury problems. Loaned to Earthquakes in 2011, Simon was a hit in the MLS and re-joined them for the 2012 campaign too. He had a purple patch in August and September, scoring four goals in as many appearances as the Earthquakes pushed for the Western Division title. Dawkins joined the Tottenham academy in 2004-05 after making 20 appearances for our U17s while still a schoolboy in 2003-04. He made an instant impact but missed most of the 2006-07 season having enjoyed a positive 2005-06 campaign for both reserves and the Under-18s. Dawkins returned to fitness for the start of the 2007-08 season and was named on the first team substitute's bench for the UEFA Cup first round, second leg tie against Anorthosis Famagusta in October 2007. He continued to score goals in our reserves for the remainder of that season before joining Leyton Orient on loan at the beginning of the next, where he made 14 senior appearances. Now he's at Villa and looking to show his scoring touch in claret and blue. INTERESTING FACT Simon Dawkins helped San Jose Earthquakes to a franchise record 72 goals last season.
